Description

Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

Robert Mondavi founded his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to produce world-class Napa Valley wines. He chose the iconic To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville as the winery’s home, known for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. It was here that Mondavi created his signature Fumé Blanc.

The winery also sources grapes from top Napa vineyards like Stag’s Leap and Carneros. Mondavi believed great wines reflect the land and the careful stewardship of its resources, blending modern techniques with tradition.

Today, the winery continues his legacy of excellence, innovation, and a commitment to pushing boundaries in winemaking.

Critical Acclaim

93 Vinous

Dark medium ruby color. Sexy, dark aromas of cassis, minerals and bitter chocolate. Sweet, plush and deep, conveying an almost syrupy ripeness counterpointed by unexpected acidity. This very generous wine boasts terrific palate presence and appeal, finishing with suave tannins and outstanding length. I liked this wine very much upon its release but it has taken a while to reveal the liqueur-like ripeness that’s typical of this vintage.

92 Wine Advocate

The stylish, elegant 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (8,300 cases of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) is not as dense as either the M-Bar or Vine Hill Ranch cuvee, but it offers a beautiful marriage of power and elegance. Cedar wood, creme de cassis, spice box, and dried herb aromas soar from the glass of this medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Private Reserve, which is somewhat reminiscent of Mondavi’s 1978. It’s all about harmony, balance, and finesse in 2002.

92 Wine Enthusiast

Mainly from To Kalon grapes, this dark, young wine is not showing its best now. It hasn’t pulled the oak, alcohol, acids, tannins and fruit together into a seamless package. The individual parts stick out, nakedly, yet possess an innate balance. Mondavi Reserves age well; this one should start to open by 2010 and hold for years after.

91 Wine Spectator

Starts simple but gains, displaying elegance and refinement, grace and nuance.
